The International Christian Studies Association was founded by Christian scholars led by Dr. Oskar Gruenwald, author of The Yugoslav Search for Man, and David Morsey, a Bible scholar and President of Harvester Mission, in 1983--the USA Year of the Bible--as a worldwide witness to Jesus Christ as Savior of the world.

ICSA's particular medium of witness is scholarship across geographical, disciplinary, and denominational boundaries, seeking to expand our understanding of God, man, and the universe to the greater glory of God and the dignity of man. In his encyclical, Fides et Ratio, Pope John Paul II recalls that: "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth--in a word, to know himself--so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves" (1998: 7).
In its purposes and goals, ICSA dovetails with IIR, reflecting the joint mission of fides et ratio, that is, conjoining faith and reason, or as St. Anselm put it, "fides quaerens intellectum" ("faith in search of understanding").  ICSA and IIR aspire to help scholars, students, and the public integrate knowledge with ethics and faith, and thus develop a greater appreciation for the wonder, beauty, and unity of God's Creation.

JIS seeks to recover the lost unity of Renaissance learning, while affirming transcendental values and faith, thus promoting dialogue across geographical, disciplinary, and denominational boundaries. JIS offers a much-needed forum for exploration and a publishing outlet for innovative scholarship, building bridges across the disciplines, and providing a key to 21st century curricula. JIS provides constructive mentoring and peer review, encouraging interdisciplinary, faith-informed, and in particular Christian scholarship at the cutting edge of knowledge, ethics and faith.  Nominated to Delta Tau Kappa, the International Social Science Honor Society, 1991.  In 1994, JIS was selected for indexing and abstracting in H. W. Wilson Company's Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (CD-ROM). Five essays published in JIS won Templeton Awards for best published papers on science and religion. JIS is listed also as an ethics resource in the Bureau of National Affairs' Codes of Professional Responsibility.  Colleagues use JIS as a resource especially in Honors courses, Liberal Studies, Religious Ethics, Science-Theology Dialogue, Russia and Eastern Europe, etc.
